Raw Green Organics Rawjuvenate Cleanse System

The Product: Raw Green Organics' Rawjuvenate Cleanse System

The Review: I don't normally do reviews of this kind of thing, because I wanted this to be a blog about my obsession with makeup and hair products. However, I am going to make an exception for this cleanse, because I'm having a hard time finding real honest reviews from people who have definitely tried this product and not just celebrity endorsements and sites doing giveaways.

I normally don't do cleanses, but I love having breakfast shakes. They're easy and it's a great way for me to force myself to get something with nutritional value into my system in the morning (I am neither a morning nor a breakfast person). I tend to get bored with flavors, though, so I keep on trying different ones. I saw this cleanse system on Daily Candy and decided to try it out because I always try to find shakes with spirulina, greenery and protein, and I am always game to try out new supplements. I saw this and was like, "I like organic greens, protein, and the combo of fiber, aloe, and probiotics is pretty good. $80 for a month's supply of all that stuff really isn't too bad compared to overpriced juice cleanses, so sure I'll try it."

I've been using this cleanse system for almost 2 weeks, so it's not like I tried it for a day or 2 and was like, I'm going to review it without giving it a shot. Basically, this system is sneaky. The shake is actually really tasty when mixed with stuff. I use milk or vanilla almond milk. It fills me up til lunch, and I never dread drinking it, so I'm sold on that. What I don't like are the supplements. Fiber is great on its own, aloe is great on its own in moderation, and everyone loves a nice probiotic. I figured everything would be all nice and mild since you're supposed to be taking them every day, but just to be safe, I started out with just 1 capsule of each instead of the recommended 3 capsules of the fiber and aloe. Good thing I did, because I wound up getting horrible stomach upset.

At first, I thought it was the aloe and stopped taking that, since it was marketed as a gentle laxative. I thought that was weird, since I've had aloe and aloe juice before and never had a problem. Normally, my stomach is cast iron and nothing bothers it. I figured they'd formulated it to be way too strong. However, my problems continued, so I did a little research and found The Detox Diva had had a similar problem. Turns out, there is senna  AND cascara sagrada in the fiber supplement (I was not familiar with those herbs and had no idea what they did. I figured it was some other type of fiber source), both of which are laxatives and stronger ones at that. You are definitely not supposed to be taking those every day, just as you are not supposed to be taking any kind of laxative every day, because it fucks with your electrolyte levels and can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies as well as screwing up your digestive process. You are way, waaaay better off just drinking a tasty aloe drink and mixing psyllium husk powder into some juice. Fiber has no need for laxatives, people.

I've worked with enough natural health and new-agey people to know that there are people out there who will insist that I didn't follow directions, that I'm "detoxing" and that I need a good colon-cleansing if I want to live to be 100. However, the fact of the matter is, regardless of whether it's my body acting up or my not following directions, taking laxatives every day --even natural ones-- is not healthy. I don't care if you think feeling like you have a mild case of food poisoning for 2 weeks is good for you, because it's not.

Oh, and no, even with the intestinal misery caused by the senna and cascara sagrada, I didn't lose any weight. Not that that was my goal in the slightest, but some payment for being miserable for that long would have been nice.  But now I know! Laxatives. Not worth it.

I would totally buy the greens and protein powder on their own if they were priced reasonably, because it is one of the best shakes I've tried. Too bad they're all insanely overpriced.

Bottom line: You can do better. Save your money and find something else. Or buy it when it's almost 65% off, like I did, and be super careful with the laxatives.

Update: Wow, I'm so glad this review has been helpful to people! Thank you all for your lovely comments and opinions. And I also feel I should clarify that I don't believe this cleanse will do any lasting harm if you decide to try it and stick with the laxative trifecta, but don't say I didn't warn you if you wind up feeling pretty sick and spending an ungodly amount of time in the bathroom. It's just my opinion that there are safer, less unpleasant ways of cleaning out your innards. Also, if you ever find a great deal for the greens and protein combo, I totally recommend it, because after I finished the whole month of shakes, my hair was growing like crazy and my skin looked amazing. Yay!

  1. Thanks for your honest feedback and review. There is a deal going on currently with 50% off so I wanted to try that but really needed to know from someone who had used it. And my stomach is not a cast iron - I have a very sensitive stomach so definitely all these laxatives would have driven me crazy. Thank you so much - Appreciate your reviews :)

  3. Thank you for such an honest review! I've been looking everywhere for something real about this cleanse. I appreciate the help :)

  4. It's meant to be a cleanse, thus the cascara sagrada. I've done a cleanse before on my own using aloe juice, cascara sagrada, chlorophyll, and fruit and vegetable smoothies and raw salads. No senna though. It's good to cleanse the system and particularly the colon once in a while from years of buildup. However, cascara sagrada shouldn't be taken more than 6 days, I believe. Also, if feasible, this kind of cleans should be done while on vacation or time off from work. The first 2 days are rough, but the energy and the amazing mood from all the raw veggies I ate was amazing! So in essence you can do this cleanse on your own, it's just a bit of work with the veggies. Too bad the laxative is with both cascara and senna. The cascara is powerful enough on its own, as is the senna. I would just recommend the cascara by itself. I would try this if the aloe was a juice and the laxative was only cascara.

  5. Nice review! I am planning on trying this cleanse out and was looking for others' experiences. I am a Nutritional Consultant, Master Herbalist and detoxification specialist and I agree that taking Senna for longer than two to three weeks daily can be problematic. Cascara Sagrada is not as strong, but still not meant for continued use. I wouldn't go so far as to say a 2 week or 4 week cleanse with them would be detrimental to one's health, but those who experience severe upset should discontinue use immediately.

The sad fact of the matter is that, for most first time cleansers, these herbs are necessary to combat years, sometimes even decades, of chronic constipation and fecal buildup in the intestines. I also see very few cleanses on the market that do NOT contain one or both of these herbs. In another very popular cleanse I have used in the past, it is recommended to use the supplement containing Senna for the first five days, and every other day thereafter or until regularity is achieved. Perhaps the instructions could be amended to include "take as needed" instead of every single day. For some, this might not occur until the second or third week of the cleanse.

Great, honest review of this product. I'll keep researching.

    1. This was a great review and truthful to all my research. Especially carnivores need the extra laxitive to remove all the meat trapped in their colon. Again it is only for a few weeks.

    2. Great and truthful comment. This is so true to carnivores. They have so much meat in their colons that they need the extra senna. I like that you said it could be taken for a few weeks. I will try this because of your comments. Thank you

  7. This showed up on LivingSocial, and I wasn't sure about trying it. Thank you greatly for your review. Very helpful!! Cleansing is one thing; loading up on laxatives is another! I'll look elsewhere.

  8. Thank you so much for your honest review. I decided to do some research before buying it and yours and is pretty much the only one I've found.

  9. Thank you for this very helpful review, I was looking for a cleanse & Detox product but you're right there is no need of taking laxative every day, that's really unhealthy!!!
Considering how expensive are those products I finally think it's better to invest in a juicer, a good book and buy organic veggies :)

  10. Thanks for posting this review! I saw a living social deal for this stuff but decided to look for some reviews before purchasing. I already have Shakeology stuff for a good meal replacement and if all the pills are laxatives this isn't worth it for me.

  11. Thank you so much for your review! I needed some help in my decision whether to try it or not. And you sure did! :)

  12. Hi! Thanks for your honest review! I was considering a purchase of this product on Living Social - special, of course - but will not thanks to your feedback...Much Apprecited!

  13. Thank you so much! I just received my 30 day detox kit and was so glad to read your honest feedback about the fiber supplement. I have irritable bowel syndrome which can extremely uncomfortable. So, taking the senna and cascara sagrada together would have been a big mistake for me. You saved me a lot of misery! Thanks again!

  14. one question though did you find that the shake mix work for you? Thank you for the feedback. I bought this on the groupon and I'm just now reading this. I'm thinking I can skip the pills etc..Thank you again

    1. Sorry I've been slacking on replying to comments! And on my blog in general. Work has been nuts lately. Anyway, I loved the shake mix! It totally worked for what I wanted- easy, quick breakfast, filling, healthy. I usually eat very healthily and almost always use meal replacement shakes for breakfast, so I didn't notice a huge change in my weight, but I bet you would see a difference if you were just starting a shake regimen. Plus, it really helped my hair, skin and nails! My hair started growing really fast.

  15. Thanks for this review. I bought this from Living Social and just received this yesterday, so this morning was my first shake, and it tasted pretty good. I don't believe in taking anything for laxatives so I'll forgo those, but, glad to hear that you saw a difference in your skin and hair. Was there any difference in your energy level?

    1. Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your comment! I didn't notice a huge difference in my energy level, which could be because I don't really get much sleep in general. Bad for me, I know. However, I did find myself drinking less coffee in the morning and taking fewer naps after work, so there was some improvement! But it wasn't like, BAM! TONS OF ENERGY! Definitely more subtle-like. Hope that helps!

  16. I was looking forward to this cleanse--especially with the living social deal. Honestly, I didn't want the supplements but seeing how OVERPRICED the greens and protein powders were, it'd be better off to just get the whole kit. Let me just say, this company gives awful customer service. After swapping emails with these people about the delayed processing time I vowed I would not buy anything else from them. They completely contradicted themselves between emails and had a very "you'll get it when it comes" attitude. I just hope I can find a similar product elsewhere with people that give good customer service.

    1. Ugh, had no idea their customer service was that bad! That makes me dislike them even more. Please let me know if you find a similar product, cause I will be all over that. :)

    2. Try Isagenix. I researched the product and company for months before deciding to introduce it to me clients. They offer a vegan protien meal replacement shake. I drink the Isagenix IsaLean Shake (vegetarian friendly, but not vegan). To this I add the Isa Greens! It's truly the best overall health line I have ever used. And the customer service is seriously amazing! Go to Amypatterson.isagenix.com and check out the videos!
      Blessings! !

  17. Thank you so much for this review! I've been on the cleanse for 4 days now, laxative pills and all, and have noticed a really upset stomach, abnormal bathroom runs, etc. Was super regular before, so think I will forego the fiber and aloe pills and keep with the shake and probiotics.

  18. Thanks for the information, my wife is currently taking this crap. Recommendations are to avoid the pills or only take one a day... the laxatives are too powerful, she ended up having diarrhea for several hours, fainted twice (almost called 911), and had no energy for a day or so after the incident. She is just doing the morning shake now and avoiding the super fiber, super aloe, and probiotic all-together. No recent problems, I would not recommend this stuff.

  19. Thanks for the info. Im doing this now... having the shake for breakfast and dinner. I'll have my early dinner at 6 and then have the shake at 8-9pm which is great, you feel so light. I was honestly scared of talking the pills because everyone said they give you bad cramps and diarrhea, but I didnt even go to the bathroom AT ALL for the first 3 days (and I was taking aloe and fiber 3 times a day).. now I have stomach cramps once a day but they go away immediately. Here is a coupon code for those intersted: THANKS10 expires 12/31/13 Enjoy and if you have a sensitive stomach take aloe and fiber 2 a week.

  20. Thank you for posting this. There is a deal on Living Social now, and I wanted to find reviews. Is there a cleanse you do recommend? Thank you.

    1. Honestly, I'm not sure if there were any I would specifically recommend, because it really depends on your needs and preferences. I have some friends who bought juicers and did their own juice cleanses and had great results, though.

    2. I really love the book "The Raw Food Detox Diet" by Natalia Rose. She really goes into what the detox is actually doing and then give shopping lists (including a Breville Juicer). There are levels that she takes you through so that you can ease into this diet without shocking your body. Additionally, in the back of the book, she has many recipes for juices, meals, salad dressings, etc. They Only drawback I've found with this diet is it can get expensive buying all the veggies and fruits. However, my body felt amazing, I lost weight, my skin was clear and seemed tighter, and my hair did seem to grow a bit faster. Good luck!

  21. Tali, there is an awesome protein powder from Nature's Sunshine called Love and Peas. I was about to get the rawjuevenate from living social but i think I'll just stick with my Love and Peas. Thanks. If anyone else is interested, go to http://www.naturessunshine.com/us/product/love-and-peas-675-g/sku-3082.aspx

  22. hmmm... I am only on day 3, but have to say from reading the comments, everyone has different reactions/needs. I too bought the program on the living social, delivery was speedy. My diet is very healthy, mostly veggies, lots of water, fruits, not much dairy/meat, no supplements, whole food diet. I am 53 years old and never had a problem with regularity until the past couple of years which recently has caused me more discomfort. Decided to give this a try, mostly because of the pro-biotics and greens, was unaware of the laxative. Also like the protein powder, have been using a similar product for months. All that said, so far I have not had a bad reaction to the supplements. It has really helped with my digestion, and only the first day was a bit uncomfortable with some stomach cramping, no bathroom problems here. As with any product, if "issues" come up, I will discontinue use, or at least cut back. I will say that it is not the probiotic causing above mentioned problems, if anything they would help. My biggest complaint with the company is that they don't send any sort of "plan" on how to use the program for the 4 weeks or what to expect. Nothing on the website either, just the directions on the package. It's not like you will have magic results just by consuming the product. You need to use in combination with a healthy diet. Thanks for providing an outlet for honesty.

    1. I'm so glad the cleanse is working out for you! And I haven't to agree with you on the instruction thing. Most actual cleanses I've seen have come with instructions on what to eat and what to avoid while cleansing. Some even have recipes. I was really surprised that this one came with nothing.

  23. I have been on this detox system (including all supplements)for 8 days and have had no noticable change other than a tiny bit softer stools. I have not had any stomach upset or spent any more time in the bathroom than normal. That's what prompted me to look up more about this product. I figured I wasn't doing something right. I found out it is as simple as it seems. I love the shake for breakfast. I mix it in dark chocolate almond milk. Serious YUM! It is not gritty, but it is very filling. I completely skip my usual mid-morning snack now and don't miss it a bit.

  24. Awful. I ordered the full 30 day cleanse. I'm not allergic to anything, but by the time I got a couple days into it, I broke out into terrible hives (and had to skip a wedding because of it!). It was awful. My entire face swelled up, my entire body was a red swollen mess for days. I felt like Will Smith in that movie Hitch. I have no idea what was in this product that made this happen, but I would be extremely cautious.

    2. My husband has that reaction when he detoxes. When you detox, you release toxins into your body. If your colon, kidney and liver and not good at clearing toxins the secondary pathway is your skin. You need to clear or boost those other pathways because your body is telling you they are clogged and its only recourse is your skin. I'm not a doctor but that is what we learned. It can take a while to clear out the pathways that are clogged before you can detox without getting a reaction or sick but its real important when you see reactions like that or detoxing will just make you sicker.

  27. I'm so glad I came across your blog as I was about to purchase this cleanse. I am a nurse and senna is used as one of our post op laxatives. It is not meant to be taken for longer than 2-3 days. And to hear that you didn't lose weight.... Ugh... I'm getting married in 5 weeks and was hoping this would help me shed those extra few pounds. Thank you so much for your review.

  28. I'm trying this right now off a groupon deal, and the fiber + aloe bottles say take 1-3 capsules a day...so I think taking 3 a day is kind of overkill. I'm taking one each capsule a day right now, and so far everything's great and bowel movements are smooth & easy. (I'm on day 5 so far.)

  29. Just bought this online yesterday with basic delivery and it's already here!!! Thanks for honest review...most reviews I read don't sound that bad. I cant wait to start tomorrow morning...though i will cut back on lax from 3 to 1.

  30. Thanks for the review. Did you only drink the shakes for Breakfast or replace all your meals while you were on the cleanse? I am looking to lost weight so was thinking if I only had 1-3 shakes a day that would help.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thank you so much for the review. I'm trying it now and was really worried about all the protein added to the shakes, afraid that I'd end up gaining weight, but based on the comments and your review, it just seems to be an additional supplement

  32. Wish I read this review about twenty minutes ago...just drank the shake and took one of each pill....now I regret taking those pills! Hopefully my stomach doesn't go crazy now!

  33. I plan on ordering this using groupon, as many of the responders have also done. I appreciate the truthful comments and your research into this product. Now, I will be aware of possible side effects and know what to cut-out, if issues should arise. I am hoping for the benefits of the shakes. I have terribly weak nails, and who wouldn't want improved skin!!! Thanks!!

  34. I wish I read your review before I started the cleanse. I stopped after day 3 (yesterday). I did not take the fiber pill, only the shake in the morning followed by the probiotic and aloe pill. My body is flipping out on me! I have incredibly painful cramps that creep up on me all day and night and my...movements...are not smooth and easy. I did a cleanse 6 years ago and it was NOTHING like this. I am miserable and cannot wait for my body to eject whatever is still left in my system!
